DEFENSE MINE : An Historic Panamint Valley Jeep Trail

Out on the east side of the Panamint Valley, there’s a trail that takes you up the Argus Range and ultimately to an old tungsten mine known as the Defense Mine. While the trail is for the most part short and easy, there are a few challenging sections along the way that can be a lot of fun if you choose to take them.

Airing down your tires for the trail is an essential part of off-roading and one that will give you significantly better traction on the rocks and will also offer a much more comfortable ride. However, getting your tires aired back up at the end of the day can be somewhat of a problem especially if you’re still a ways off from a gas station with a working air compressor. Of course, the best solution to this problem is to bring your own source of air but a good hard mounted compressor or CO2 air tank can take up a lot of space inside your Jeep and most of the basic portable units simply don’t have what it takes to fill up four over sized tires in a reasonable amount of time. And, that’s why we decided to get an ARB High Output On-Board Air Compressor for our old 2009 Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited.

Differential Fluid Service Write-Up

Changing the fluid in your Jeep JK Wrangler’s differentials is an important part of routine maintenance. New gear oil will insure your differentials will be properly lubricated and functioning properly. And, unlike previous Jeep Wranglers, you will not need to pop open the differential cover in order to perform this maintenance. Granted, I do recommend that you do so anyway from time to time (every other fluid change) as it will give you a chance to inspect the gears within it for any damage or unsual wear.

On our way home from the 2013 Overland Expo, we decided to take a round about way back to California and do a little overlanding ourselves. Heading south to Gila Bend and then west on Interstate 8, our first detour along the way would be over to an area known as Oatman Flats.

Since I first heard about it a few years back, I have been wanting to attend the Overland Expo and see what it was all about. Certainly, as anyone who knows me knows, I love gadgets and innovative equipment that can help out on the trail and figured, if anyone would have it, they would.
