Changing the fluid in your Jeep JK Wrangler’s differentials is an important part of routine maintenance. New gear oil will insure your differentials will be well lubricated and function properly. And, unlike previous Jeep Wranglers, it will not be necessary remove the differential cover in order to do this. Granted, I do recommend that you do so anyway from time to time (every other fluid change) as it will give you a chance to inspect your gears and catch any damage or unsual wear.   2. 2012 JK Unlimited with 3.73 gears running 35 inch tires. Currently 22k miles.

    Question: not sure if I need limited slip additive, how do I know? The manual is very vague.

    Running 35 inch tires do I need to go with a different weight?

    Mobil 1, Royal Purple, or Mopar (does it matter that Jeep is still under warranty?)

    Switching out diff covers for Poison Spyder bombshells so need advice on which fluid to go with. Great thread! Thanks!!

  4. 2014 Jeep 4 door Willys edition.
    At the dealership getting an oil change at 18,500 miles. They advised I change my differential oil showed me the color difference. Please advise what type I should use and how much in front and rear. I am doing it myself not paying their price!

    Wanted to ask… How can I check if my 2009 Jeep Wrangler Sahara has an LSD or Not? Also the mechanic said that the rear differential is damaged and not working … How can I check the same without jacking the car or do I need to jack my JK? And what should i do just rotate the rear tire to check if both tires are turning?

  6. I have a 2007 jk that I bought a year ago and I wanted to replace both front and back differentials oil. What oil do you guys recommend ? Do you guys recommend taking the covers off and replace the gaskets?

  7. I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4 door with rear limited slip differential. Is it o.k. to use the Royal Purple synthetic 75W90 instead of 80W? The auto store near me says 80.

  8. hi – I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler 4×4 w/64,000kms – was told I need to do differential which will cost me about $700 – feel let down as my 5-yr warranty is just due now in July but nowhere close to 100,000kms – honestly, I don’t want to spend so much on something I don’t understand. always have had oil change and other maintenance issues taken care of at the dealership – your advice is very much appreciated. thanks in advance.
