SUBJECT:
UCONNECT And Voice Recognition Operation
DISCUSSION:
On 2007 Sebring and Nitro vehicles, the Voice Recognition and U-CONNECT selections
for RES and REQ (RET and REL International radios) radios will only work if the vehicle is
equipped with the factory installed Uconnect Hands-Free feature (sales code RSP).
On 2007 Model year Wranglers vehicles, the Voice Recognition and U-CONNECT
selections for RES and REQ (RET and REL International radios) radios will not work
because these vehicles do not offer the factory installed Uconnect Hands-Free feature
(sales code RSP). Do not replace radios on Wranglers because these function do not
work.
POLICY:

I would like to know why this button is even on my radio if it will never work? Does anyone have one that works? what is this?

WOW, WAS I EVER MAD AT THIS….I WENT HOME AFTER BEING TOLD BY SALES YUP YOU GOT UCONNECT .WHEN YOU GET HOME. I CAN PROGRAM IT. WAS TOLD TO READ THE MANUEL. HA…THAT WAS FUNNY BECAUSE THE BOOK SAID GO TO SECTION 3 ON PROGRAMMING. I GO TO THE PAGE IT TELLS ME TO GO TO ANOTHER SECTION IN THE BOOK. IT GIVES THE STEPS TO PROGRAM MY BLUETOOTH DEVICE. WELL IT DIDNT WORK. WENT BACK TO DEALER. TOLD ME OK MR JIMNO YOU VEH IS READY FOR PICK UP….LOL NO UCONNECT..I ASKED SERVICE WHAT I NEED TO DO TO ACTIVATE. THEY SAID TO CALL THE CHRYSLER 800 SERIVE NUMBER….WHEN I CALLED THEM THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY WOULD REPLACE MY RADIO. I GOT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID YA, THEY WOULD REPLACE MY RADIO FOR ONE WITH A WORKING UCONNECT….WELL THIS TIME THE DEALER SAID NO WE WERE TOLD THAT THE RES RADION WOULD NEVER HAVE A UCONNECT SERVICE……
TALK ABOUT BULLSHIT ….I WANNA TAKE THIS TO AN ATTY CAUSE I KNOW I CANT BE THE ONLY ONE THAT WAS TO A LIE.
I had the same issue – I was told it was an installed option only to find out that it’s not even available for the Wrangler yet and might never be even though the buttons are on the radio. When I asked what they (the dealership) was prepared to do considering they misled me in the course of making the sale, they said if it became available, I might be able to get a discount on the equipment but not the installation. In other words, tough luck.
I had the very same problem. I was told by the salesman that the UConnect could be activiated by the service department. I really wanted it because I have the manual transmission, and it would make talking on my cell safer. I was also told that the Sirius radio could be activated with a small module of some sort. Wrong on that one too! Does anyone have a suggestion regarding whether we have legal recourse on this issue? Thanks!
any movement on the uconnect or bluetooth issue? i’m right there with the rest of you…ready for legal action.

Here’s what I’ve found so far. I have an 08 wrangler with the REQ radio. WEnt on the dodge lot today and found an 08 liberty with the REQ radio and Uconnect. I looked like the mic was just above the mirror in the headliner. Uconnect was working and the sound came through main speakers. The REQ display showed Uconnect info. So I then went into parts and asked if the REQ radio was different between a wrangler and a liberty. It is not, so the radio can operate Uconnect. Then I asked what “modules(s)” are between the mic and the radio. He wasnt really sure but in a liberty it looked like Uconnect was also part of the keyless entry system. My next step is to contact the radio manufacturer and see what parts they make. What I mean is do they make the finished product, uconnect, MyGig, keyless entry, etc. With any luck I can talk to one of the design engineers and find out what parts are in each module and what they do. There is an aftermarket kit, probably made by them, but it has an amp in it because operates its own speaker. It also has its own keypad so I doubt it is a true integration into the REQ radio. I want to see if the aftermarket module can be fitted into an REQ radio just like it is in a liberty. Hopefully use the module and mic and everything else is run through the radio. If I had to guess why it’s not on a wrangler is because of noise. Uconnect uses voice command and if you’re running with the soft top or no top, you probably cant dial out with it. Some of that can be fixed with super-cardiod mic and good placement.

Okay so I was just looking on line to figure out how to program the u connect in my 07 jeep wrangler unlimited. You mean to tell me I am all excited and this damn thing isnt going to work. Im going home to check my window sticker. They better not have charged me for that option or Im going to throw a fit.
I purchase a ‘2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara this past week-end (11-25-07) and was told that a u-connect module (installed on factor stereos w/ u connect) will be available in ‘2008 through any local Jeep dealership. Government regulations are requiring all ‘2009 models to come equipped with wireless blue tooth standard on all vehicles. Be patient my fellow Jeep owners hands free yammering is only months away.
I just drove my JK 4door out of the dealer today. I tried playing with the u-connect bluetooth. No dice. I was looking forward to using it with my phone, not. Maybe we have to wait a few months like the reply before me. i hope they get it straight.
well, I too have been pissed off for more than a year and have exhausted all options for getting this crappy radio to work with blue tooth.
I have searched and contacted just about everyone out there and to no avail. I was told that it “may” be available after 2009, as stated earlier, but at what cost?
So, to alleviate the problem, I RIPPED out the crappy radio and installed a decent aftermarket radio WITH blue tooth, usb, ipod connect, sd card and cd for only $79.00 plus an additional $7.99 for the dash adapter kit.
VR3 link http://www.roadmasterusa.com/vr3_auto.html
Although it shows that the Bluetooth USB/SD Car Stereo lists for $189, i have found them on ebay and walmart for under $90.00
If everyone out there is making after market stereos with blue tooth for such a low price, why cant mopar / jeep do the same thing?
signed,
if there is a way, i will find it!
Hi all,
U-Connect module for all RES, REQ, REN Mopar radios is Jeep Part# 1-82211004.
Mine is getting fitted to my JK next week.
Oh, BTW – I am in Australia, but bought the module from the US.
Darren
Well i don’t feel so bad dealer told me it had voice connect .I was going to by a X but opted for the saraha for this option.Well it didn’t work called dealership first thing they said they would check into it after several calls I was told it was an option I hade to purchase I said how much they said had no listing.
Called into dealer to check on this feature for my 2007 Unlimited. After calling Chrysler, the service guy called me back. According to Chrysler they are not making it for the 07 and 08 not making the part – through testing there was too much interference and the “quality was not up to par” I guess the QA guys forgot to get rid of the buttons. 🙁
I’m ready for legal action… I have a 2008 Wrangler X – I got it last weekend – I see the buttons… everything else works. The ipod, etc. But, no UCONNECT!!!! No options to install it or get it working… no one has answers. I’m very aggravated with the situation. It’s one thing to notice a production flaw in 07 vehicles, but it is another to continue onward with such a flaw thru 2008 and perhaps 2009. That’s 3 years of vehicles sold with a lack of honesty from the manufacturer. Other than that… I love my jeep! =)
They make a kit with a mic that attaches to the back of the stereo on the jk forum.
I picked up my 2008 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited on Saturday, I have the MyGig system with the u-connect button and voice activation. My dealership was honest with me and told me that the wrangler does not have a u-connect module available yet but it should be out soon and will probably run about $100 to $150. I think I am going to pass on it and just get the MyGig lockpick with Microphone and backup cam. All said and done it will cost me around $400 and I can easily install it myself and have tons more features unlocked. A little steep but considering what I am getting for the money as opposed to just a u-connect adapter I think it is worth very penny
OK so picked up my jeep sahara unlimited 2 mths ago. Brand New! I was told that the vehicle can be hooked up with the uconnect but it would cost me another 350 or something like that. I tell them to go ahead with the install. I get my vehicle back today after (3 wks) with it installed but the system doesnt hear me. Not recognize me but doesn’t hear anything. After calling the dealer and reading everything online. I throw my hands up. Jeep won’t even bother to call me back. Ugh…
I have a 08 rubicon, mygig rer version and just got my hands free to work, it works great!!!! Go to ebay, search uconnect, look for seller mr. cd1 or something real close and he will get you what you need. I ordered the same mic kit from chrysler and it did not work out of the box. I am working on getting a rer version to work using the same kit, plugs into the same place, same connector, but I think on it I will have to take it in to have it activated with the starscan tool, rer you can acess the engineer menu yourself and activate it, $ 65.00 part and all is good.
Does everybody know the difference between RES, REQ, REN Mopar radios and the REL Export radio in my car?
I´m from Germany (2007 Wrangler X)and I`ve the same problem with the u-connect (and with my dealer, because they`ve no idea to solve it).
If the Jeep Part# 1-82211004 would work in my car, then I`ll buy this thing.
I too have been dealing with this for almost a year!!!!! I was hoping that with the 2008 Mandatory Hands Free Law in California they would have fixed this knowing the law was going to change. There are a lot of JK’s here!!!!!! I’m sure those owners feel the same way. I WILL check on that part #!!!
I waited 3 months for my ’08 unlimited rubicon to arrive and soon discovered that this wonderful feature, mandatory in many states for hands-free phone usage, is not available on my model. My purchasing dealership did not have an answer and another was more honest stating that Chrysler is waffling on when it might be available, end July… I have a list of items to add to my rubicon and this is on top (unresolved) while items lower on the list are being fulfilled. So… what does Chrysler/Jeep Product Marketing need to see before firming up plans to offer this needed option? I hope they are at least in contact with their market or it may fall to another manufacturer…. arrg!
I purchased my 2007 Wrangler Jeep Sahara Unlimited 4X4 about 4 months ago at a dealer ship in Yorkton,Saskatchewan,Canada. I was excited as i was told I had the ability to answer my cell with this vehicle, and the sales person along with my daughter got all quiet in Jeep as I made sure my Bluetooth was on…so we could get it set up (voice activate thingy, i was so excited and really wanted this). NO GO! She called someone (Jeep i beleive is what she said) and they told her whatever they told her, and what she told me was that due to the wiring of the 4×4 there are conflicts with the u connect and that they are working on it and should be working this summer.
I’ve recently called to check on it… dealership is telling me Sales Girl is gone. They checked VIN number and are telling me i never had it in the first place. I scheduale appointment as they want to confirm because i see buttons for this, and i was lead to beleive when purchsing that I’d be using this as soon as sales gal helped me set it up.
They called yesterday to cancel appt., They got ahold of someone who confirmed what my sales lady told me that day.
I don’t know who to believe or where to turn as I’ve been told three different things.
I decided to check on line…and here i am…. ONLY GOOD THING….. is knowing, I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS HASSLE!
I think i will still be visiting the dealership this afternoon….
* trying to keep devil horns covered*
Does anyone know how to override the u-connect voice service to favorize the phone’s voice service over u-connect bluetooth connection?
I have a 2008 JK 4dr Sahara w/ the myGig nav system, and I have working Bluetooth. The trick is it comes in the JK as a disabled feature because someone at DC was being an idiot.
What you need to do is buy a compatible microphone which plugs into the back of the radio. Then there is a 3-button combo you can push on the radio to enter what’s called the engineering menu, which will allow you to enable the U-Connect & Voice Recognition features of the myGig. I don’t know if this is possible with the non-nav radio, but I would think so. I apologize for not remembering all the specific details, but it was one of the first mods I made to my jeep because cellphones are prohibited on my base without a handsfree device.
It’s worked like a champ ever since. I recommend doing a search on JK-Forum.com for details.
This can also be made to work on the non-MyGig radios as well. You need to buy a kit from Mopar, install it, and then have the dealership hookup to the StarScan tool and activate it. I just did this last week on my 08 Rubicon and it works great. Offshoot is that for an extra $30ish dollars you can buy an iPod adapter that will allow your iPod to be controlled through the radio as well.
Upgrade 9.173 updated the radio to accept the mic inputs. I have an 08 Sahara Unlimited and Voice commands and uconnect work fine. I did have to go into engineering mode and turn on Uconnect and Voice activation and add a mic but it all works great.

I have a 2008 JK Wrangler, dealer added a Mygig Nav Radio. I added a Microphone and the Uconnect works perfect.
Has anyone added a reverse camera, if so what kind, what you have to do to make it work.
Thanks,
Garry
Ok, well i have a 07′ sahara and ive never really bother about the random u-connect button on my dash that when i press it says unavailable, but now its starting to stare me down and i really want it to work. can i get this whole u-connect thing on my 07?
I just took delivery on a 2009 sahara 4 door. We looked at the window sticker, and it said u-connect. Talked to the salesman and he said yes it’s in there. Got it home, NO U CONNECT!! Now he is saying that it’s not available on a wrangler, but oops there is a mopar accessory that I can buy to install it if I want to spend another 550.00. I told him that we have already paid for it whgen we bought it as a part of our cars package. This sounds like a class action suit waiting to happen.
I will not drive a brand new vehicle forever with a button that tell me not available!!
Jerry Perkins (or anyone else that can help),
I too have a 2008 sahara and was wondering how to install this mic in the back. Is there a chance that it might already have a mic installed and is just awaiting the software update to enable it or no? Also, I havent updated the software before, I just bought the jeep yesterday, is it pretty easy to install? Thanks ahead of time.
I just bought a 2008 unlimited 4×4 jeep wrangler Sirrus radio and I want to install unconnect.. The dealer and salesman told me it had u-connect.. I want it .. My nuvi -680 gps does work through the aux and a jack or through the radio.. some static.. I want just radio and then I want uconnect. Any help would be appreciated. Not any lies to sale a car.. I have had jeeps all my adult life and I want what I want in my new Unlimited 4×4 jeep wrangler
I too have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler X 4 wheel drive manual, I bought the vehicle new in August 2007, added the u connect package as a extra for $350.00 more, To this day I have been running around with Chrysler & the dealership for this part, Finally the other day I had to get a refund from the dealership for the part, I am up for a class action suit, Anybody know any good lawyers. Also does anybody know any other radios, etc that may have a U-Connect or Blue Tooth that will work in a jeep for a decent price, I don’t mind ripping my factory radio out if there is something else out there.
WOW – that’s bull, why even have the button if it’s not there. lets get a little smarter jeep makers.
When we bought our nitro few years back – YEP! You got UCONNECT. called them, NOT no uconnect. SO WHY PEOPLE WHY
I’ve had my KJ Sports Cherokee for about 30 months. I bought it new with U-Connect installed. I had no trouble connecting my LG mobile phone to the module, and it has worked perfectly. BUT . . . now I’ve bought a Nokia E63, and although I managed to pair the mobile to the module, the module refuses to recognise the new phone. From what I’ve read above, I’m not on my own. Perhaps Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep needs a giant kip up the bunghole for supplying junk at quality prices.
Terry T
Chrysler, This is why you and so many other auto companies are having to file bankruptsy,or get a bail out. You put out parts on vehicles that do not work, You do not work to resolve the problems or help the customer that was promised something, We get screwed. yet you profit. Shame on you Chrysler. If I could find a good attorney for a class action suit I would file.
I had to put anpother whole system in my 2007 Jeep 4 door wrangler, with a u connect that did not work, set me back $1000.00 but I have everything I need on it now, GPS/DVD bluetooth etc.
Well i bought a 2007 Wrangler X unlimited only to find the same problem….no U connect. Sucks…..but everyone can complain about it and say “lets sue Chrysler” but nobody is really willing to do it….besides Chrysler is way to busy trying to stay in business to worry about “our” stupid U connect problems…which is one small reason they are in the mess they are in….bad customer service.
Uconnect does exist for 2007-2009 JK’s. I figured it out about 2 years ago and posted it for everyone. Do a google search for “Uconnect Jeep RichC” and you should be able to find my instructions. It’s a big file becasue of the pictures but it makes the install easy….about 45 to 60 minutes.
I’m not really sure why all the dealers are super retarded or being so deceptive about the U-connect thing..I also don’t understand why it is that still to this day they are not installing the u-connect microphone after the numerous complaints that must have come pouring in from customers whom were mislead, lied to, or simply given wrong information from uninformed salesmen.
I purchase my JK in May of 2008 Unlimited Sahara with Mygig. I did ask the salesman if the vehicle had u-connect and he gave me the correct information which is that it is u-connect ready however they microphone for the jk is yet to be released as chrysler/jeep did not feel that the mic was up to par for the wrangler (given the fact that it is a convertable and also that most uconnect equiped vehicles have the ucnnect in the rear view mirror which cannot be done on the wrangler with the cnvertible top and the fold down windshield.)
I just want to give everyone the facts so you know what to do if you wish to activate your uconnect.
MYGIG: You can purchase the factory retrofit microphone from the dealer for @45 dollars. Simply remove a few bolts to slide the radio out and plug in the mic into the back of the radio. Get the radio into the engineering menu by holding these 3 buttons simultaneously SCAN UP AND DOWN and MENU buttons. Scroll down through the Menu to one that says VR Uconnect, select it an enable it. Mount the mic somewhere nice and discreet using the double sided tape strip provided and your in business. Or you can also buy the mic from coastal tech for like 20 bucks and do the same thing..however I personally think the mopar mic is better.
NoN-Mygig (regular radio): U need to purchase the Uconnect kit I think it is like 200 bucks. You can find it on the accessories website for for jeep dot com in the owners section.
Hope this info helps. if anyone has any further questions you can pm me on jk forum at trick50

The problem is with the dealer not the radio. Due to the fact that the radios that come in the wrangler are used in several other model MOPARs you get all the same buttons. If the dealer did a little research they would know that yes the radio is called U-connect but that particular feature was never intended to be enabled on the Wrangler. Why you ask? Well, once again the uconnect system is used in several MOPAR vehicles and has the microphone usually built into the mirror. Since the Wrangler windshield has the ability to fold they believed that this would compromise the wiring to the mic combined with the fact that Jeeps with soft tops have much more road noise than your standard passenger car the microphone reception was poor. Don’t shoot the messanger I found this info after doing ALOT of research on the internet. I have an 07 and an 08 4 Door both with the RES radio and neither one has the UConnect that works but I did my own reasearch before I bought them and knew this to be that case. Its so hard to find a dealer these days that really knows what they are talking about. Most breeze through the brochure when a new model comes out and recite it like gospel without knowing what the vehicle really does. I agree the window sticker is misleading. At a minnimum they could have given the wrangler radio a differant name and the owners mannual needs a serious re-write. I’ll be purchasing the MyGIG w/Nav and a mic off of e-bay soon enough anyway. Why pay $1200 for it from the factory when you can pick it up aftermarket for $400.
I bought a Jeep 4dr Sahara on June 1st. Didnt have time to mess around with the phone, till a few weeks ago when i got pulled over and given a $130 ticket for talking on the phone while driving. so i got motivated to use my new hands free function.
2 1/2 years after this thread started Jeeps solution to the problem is in the manual on page 83.
Phone Button (uconnect phone)
When you press this button, a “Not Equipped with uconnect” message will display on your radio screen.
clearly, problem solved!
I have a 2007 Rubicon 4-door and i have the mygig with nav and my u-connect works fine i don’t know what the original owner did but i have it. Also i just purchased the the u-connect kit part # 1-82211878 at the jeep dealer to put in my wifes 4 door Jeep Wrangler X she has the REQ radio and the dealer looked it up and said this would work. I installed it (very easy to do) and now i need to go by the jeep dealer so they can Star Scan the system with some type of software so it will activate the u-connect. ill let you know if it works.
ok went to the jeep dealer and got the u connect installed in my wifes 2008 jeep and it works. good luck to you all.
I have a 2009 JK Rubicon 4 door. I have been I purchased the Mopar kit that was recomended for my jeep. In all there documention. The had it on there web site, there accsessory brochurces. I have paid for it and has been 2 months with out it working. They say they are waiting for a software patch. I have the REQ radio. Not sure what is going one. They replace the unconnect kit twice thinking it might be faulty. Looks like it an enginner problem. I have made countless call and gotten no where. From what I can get out of the dealer is if it works you are lucky. If it doesn’t patiently wait. What kind of answer is that. I had no Idea Dodge has been ignoring this for 3 years.
I bought a 2009 Jeep Gr Cherokee w the REQ radio. It’s a $35000 car and when I get home and go to pair my phone to the buttons on the radio it tells me I dont have this feature. So I figure I just got bent over… so I go spend $400 having the Mopar part installed by the dealer. I’m told that I just need to follow the owner’s manual instructions when I get home…. Guess what… It tells me I don’t have this feature. Are you kidding me??
We purchased a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Saraha Package. The Hands Free and Phone buttons are both on the vehicle. We was told that we could go to Radio Shack and buy a kit for around $80.00 that would let me use my cell phone hands free in the Jeep. I have been to Radio Shack and they have no idea of what I’m talking about.
Can anyone tell me what kit (specifically) I need to ask for?
jeep 2008 wrangler unlimited mine worket well the dealer as to go in star system in programed in the computer the new uconnect module !!
I have a 2009 Wrangler. When I bought it last March I was told UConnect is not an available option in the Jeep. Almost a year later, with a new hands-free law passed, I asked the desalership if UConnect is available, and it is so I had it installed and I am ready to rip it out and throw it out the window. I asked the dealership if it comes with a manual and they said it’s in the car manual, which it isn’t. It’s supposed to be easy to figure out, but there is no technical support available. Now I’m left trying to figure out how to get it to work. It does not recognize names or numbers that I say, only transferres random phone numbers from my phone book to the car, and is activated only sometimes. I was driving today and heard my phone ringing and waited for it to pick up on bluetooth but it didn’t. I paid too much money to be frustrated at a voice in my car.
Tina, which radio do you have? Is it the Nav system, or non Nav radio?
