  1. I’m getting a sound while driving like a squeek on release of the clutch from 1st to 2nd for example…but I can do it if I step on it while driving.. sounds like an engine mount or something… The torque of the engine causes the squeek, anyone else??

    matt

  2. Is it normal? I brought it to the dealer and he said everything is tight, greased the rear busings on sway bar, still does it…doesn’t seem to be getting louder so not sure.. guess i’ll keep an eye on it.. describe what it does on yours? I can get it to do it everytime shifting from 1st to 2nd or from 2nd into third, or like I said if i punch it in 2nd or 3rd i can hear it…

  3. Matt,
exactly what u said. When i shift from 1>2 or 2>3 or just punch the gas in 2nd 3rd even sometimes 4th it sounds like squeeks you hear on a basketball court soming from the front end. it only does it for a sec or 2 then goes away. I brought it in like 3 weeks ago and they said no trouble found. I do not know if this TSB is the same issue because I do not recall hearing it when i am in neutral. have you tried that test in this TSB yet? I am goign to try riight after work

  4. Yes I tried the TSB diagnosis and i’m not getting that sound, you hit the nail on the head, sounds like a shoe squeek on a basketball court….I guess we’ll just keep an ear out for it and see if it gets worse, let me know if you ever discover the problem (if it is a problem).. thx

On another note, do you have a softtop on your jeep? 2 door? I have a question about mine, maybe you might know the answer..

    thx
    matt

  5. ok i tried the TSB diagnosis jsut now and I do not have the sound either but I did find this on another site fourm.

Well, I took it in for the squeak, and rode with the senior service tech. He told me that it normal for this type of transmission as it only happens in 2 thru 6 and no squeak or chirp in 1st gear. He told me that it should go away after the tranny is fully broken in. I bought it, so I guess were all stuck with it until either the JK tsb pops up for it, or our tranny’s start to self destruct.

    ******************************************************************

Also, I do have a softtop but its still sitting under the hardtop till it gets warm here so I never actually used it yet

  6. thx for the info…i’m guessing its the tranny mount and probably breaking in… i was worried there was something loose but it sounds like were not the only ones.. good to know..

thx again.. other than the squeek i’m loving my new jeep… does your axle seem a bit clunky?? the service dept told me its normal to have some slack but again you never know..its so new knowone seems to know too much about them

    thx
    matt

  7. Thank goodness for this TSB because this sound is about to drive me crazy. Also I have the same basketball court squeek when shifting gears, Im sure there will be a TSB for this one eventually if the sound doesnt go away on its own.

  8. yeah, i just picked up my new Sahara Unlimited sat.evening 3-10-07, and I have heard this over the past 2 days. I’m taking it in tomorrow 1st thing with this info.

    Thx.

  9. I just had a clutch go out at 2200 miles – had to be towed to a dealer. No parts failure just a burned up clutch. I noticed some noise but more smell after normal driving. Any thoughts as to if this TSB could have been related? I’ve mostly only driven manual transmissions, so I don’t think it was “driver error”… Dealer was ambiguous but it didn’t seem as if he was aware of the TSB. Thanks.

  10. I have been having the same problem. I have an appointment next week to have the problem looked at/fixed. I will be be bringing a copy of this TSB. Has anyone had the problem fixed to their satisfaction? Thanks for the info!

  11. I understand that this is a TSB for manual transmissions, but my automatic has a squeal when I am under mild load in any gear. It’s barely noticable in 1st, but by the time it’s in 4th, it’s really loud. If I let off the accelerator, it goes away completely. If I accelerate quickly, there is no noise. Any ideas?

  12. WELL AFTER GOING BACK AND FORTH TO COURTESY CHRYSLER JEEP. THE LAST TECH TOLD ME I WOULD GET USED TO IT THAT’S HOW THEY ARE. WELL IT DIDN’T UPSET ME WHAT HE SAID BUT I WAS TIRED OF ALL THE CRAZY THINGS I’VE BEEN TO TOLD…

I CALL CHRYSLER AND COMPLAINED SO I HAD APPT TO TAKE IT IN…. THEY TOLD ME MINE IS THE 2ND ONE TO REPORT THIS AND THIS BULLETIN DOES APPLY. SURE ENOUGH…ITS FIXED AND I’M NOT STALLING ON TAKE OF AND IT CURED THE LACK OF POWER I WAS HAVING

  13. I have a strange squeek that the dealer can’t find. while cruzing between 1500 and 2000 RPM i get a constant squeek. If i step on the gas or let off the squeek goes away. I do get a very quiet squeek when shifting but no noise at all when the jeep is not moving which leads me to believe its not the throw out bearing. I just notced last night while driving home in the rain I could not make it squeek but today it squeeks again. The dealer is not being very helpful, is anyone hearing things like this?

  14. Just got mine back from the dealer after taking it in for a constent “belt” like squeel I noted after driving approxmatly 30 min. and then pulling up to a light or into my drive. It would squeel no matter if I had it in netural, gear, clutch in, clutch out, braking, accelerating or coasting. The squeel stops when the wheels stop moving. The dealer replaced my throw-out bearing. Diden’t stop the squeel. The only thing it did do was loosen up my shifting from the nice tight factory feel to the “been up in the air and had her insides riped out and then shoved back in” feel. Needles to say I’m pissed. My jeep has only 3000 miles on it and it’s starting to feel and sound like it has 300,000 miles on it. If you have a constant squeeling sound it is not the throw-out bearing. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to tighten up my shifting? Or possibally what in the world is squeeling on my brand new jeep? Help.

  15. Mark me as another guy with not only this recall notice re: the pre-load, but I also have that annoying sneaker on basketball kind of noise when shifting gears or hammering on the gas and putting the Jeep under load. I just got back from the stearler this morning whose tech said it was normal, but the tech was a jerk (I used another word here in my orignal post that might be a ‘no-no’ and didn’t want to upset the moderator) who refused to even acknowledge the preload TSB and do that repair work (I was hoping they were interconnected and would fix both problems). As far as I am concerned, that sneaker squeel can’t be a normal noise. A normal noise doesn’t pop up 3,000 miles after new in my opinion. I will be rescheduling service appt at a dealer where I know someone in hopes of a proper diagnosis. I will post if I find a fix.

  16. I ‘ve had the throw-out bearing procedure done to my Jeep did not fix the problem, the first time I had mine in was about 700 miles now I have about 4100 on it. I’ve also spoken with a Chrysler Customer Service Rep (Marvin) who basically told me I had to deal with it, to me this is an UNACCEPTABLE answer (hopefully anyone with this problem feels the same)where’s DCX’s loyalty to it’s customers this is my second Jeep. I’ve also had mine to a total of 3 dealerships the techs and service managers have heard it but don’t know what else to do about it. They have told me the noise is hard to locate and I should wait ’til it gets louder(worse) so it’s easier to locate. I’ve even talked to a mechanic who has worked on mainly Chrysler products for years(he even builds Dodge racecars), he said it sounds to him like it could be in the vaccum line, a motor drives a needle in and out of a hole in the throttle body depending on the amount of air/fuel needed or something like that, anyway that may cause this type of noise. Cold air intake may fix problem, but I don’t have $300 to throw away to see. That’s my 4 cents worth.

  17. I had this aweful squeal from day 1, was told it would break in and go away. Now at 20,000 KM got fed up, and they “fixed” the throw-out bearing. Well guess what… they took 3 extra days and NO COURTESY CAR! Go it back, smelled like a burnt clutch for a few days… and guess what.. the squeal is back…I am so sick and tired of this. And to think that this is my first new vehicle purchase. Very pissed off at Chrysler.

  18. I was contacted by Chrysler, they sent 3 of their Engineers and 1 from Dana corp. Had the Jeep for about 6 hours they test drove it, checked it out, replaced a pinion seal, pulled front axle shafts, disconnected rear drive shaft, put everything back together, test drove it again still has squeal. Said they will be getting more engineers on the problem and they WILL find out what it is. Also their Sahara that they drove from Michigan had a similar squeal

  19. Matt R:

Is there a specific number or website to contact Chrysler to lodge similar complaints? I figure the more complaints, the more likely we will get it fixed. The squeaky wheel gets the oil….

  20. I’ve had my JK since Oct 2006, first time i took it in for the “squeal” they said it was the alternator…..NOT…second time they replaced the throwout bearing, that held for about 10 miles and it started again. Third time, they did the very same repair. Actually thought that time they got it, but about 2,000 miles later….IT’S BACK!!!. To the dealer again today and contacted Chrysler Customer Service (which only pissed off the dealership) after having the vehicle 10 hrs they called and said it was the throwout bearing again, but they wouldn’t fix it. They said the “FIX” isn’t working and they weren’t going to waste their time. CRYSTAL JEEP, INVERNESS FLORIDA told me to just drive it, “there’s nothing wrong, it’s just making a noise”. I’m supposed to be talking with the ZONE REP for Crysler tomorrow, i’ll try to keep you updated.

  21. I had the same problem (the squeal) the engineers (see 10/14 comment) should be sending out a new TSB for putting some sealant around the throttle body to get rid of the SQUEAL I had the procedure done on Monday (11/5/07) and so far it seems to have worked. Let’s hope it holds up.

  22. ive had the same squeal and a lack in power.ive not had it in the shop yet. ive put 16,000 miles on it. there is a thing called a lemon law if you go in three times and they do not or can not fix it,its a lemon. i will give them three trys and if it not fix i will leave it.and thay can shove up there a**.ive read all your problems and i think its awful on chrysler part to do there customer’s in this way. i had the same problem on a 06 silverado chevy, i had it in 5 times and they did not fix it. so i sold it and bought a jeep. this time thy will fix it or keep it. we pay a lot of money for these vehicles.we should not be made to feel stupid. ive had my limit with these people. thanks for your information on everything here and thanks for posting this.

  23. I had the squeal problem from day 1. Brought it to 2 dealers and told me it was normal. Showed them the new tsb on the disk clutch making squealing noise when changing gears or pushing on the gas pedal. They kept it for 4 days and now for the last 3 days no more squealing.

  24. Ok guys i read all the comments i bought my 07 jeep in oct. 06 i had 4000 mi. and the same issue. same sh**ty response from chrysler. went to another dealer and the worked on it for 2 days… come to find out the clutch disc was rubbing.. now have 22k mi. and going back again! last chrysler i will buy!

  25. not really sure if mines the clutch disk or the throw out bering, but either way, we shouldnt be told to “get used to it” or “they all make it.” new cars are NOT supposed to squeal under normal oporating conditions. we signed for NEW vehicles, with factory warrenties, meaning that if it comes wrong from ohio, they fix it free of charge. period.

  26. My Brother got his 2007 JK and I’m not sure if he had a squeak, but he took his off road once and the rear differential sway bar bracket snapped off. They replaced it with a brand new differential (I noticed the welding on the bracket that holds the sway bar in place is done very poorly! spot welding as opposed to straight continuous welding) Then 1 week later the clutch went out completely!

Now the dealer ship won’t cover it because its passed its warranty. They want to charge him 280 for the clutch and 500 to put it in. I love jeeps but this JK I will never buy or recommend.

  27. I had my Jeep in for this TSB this past week. No problems with the Dealership fixing it. I just printed off a copy of the TSB, bought it with me, took the technician for a ride and he agreed this was the problem. Parts were ordered and it was taken care of under warranty. Squeak is gone. I also had the clutch disc TSB taken care of at the same time. They did both to make sure the squeak was fixed with just one trip in. That was a refreshing concept from a Dealership.

  28. Just had my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited clutch replaced via this TSB.

Symptoms were squeaking/creaking noise… thought might be mount loosened or similar.

Also note that the transmission now shifts better… tended to crunch a little on upshifts and downshifts in lower gears. That is now gone.

Also note that before I got the vehicle out of the lot I had noticed the clutch engaged too high, and had brought it to the attention of one dealer, whose mechanic said seemed fine.

  29. Just had my clutch go out completely within say 30 seconds of a rough shift from, I believe 2nd to 3rd, tried to go to 4th, couldn’t go in and by the time I got to the stop light, the clutch pedal was on the floor. No squeak that I can remember. It’s a 2007 JK Rubican with 45,000 miles on it. (I drive alot for work) Anybody hear of this? They are towing it to the dealership right now. Talked to them, so far they say they haven’t heard of it. Will post when they find out what’s up.

  30. Update on Clutch “disintegration” on 2007 JK Wrangler (45,000 miles in 17 months). Went from sticking in gear once, to clutch pedal on the floor in less than 30 seconds. Before dealership got back with me, I called my long time service shop. Previously I had a new Wrangler that I drove to 256,000 miles. My mechanic said he believes the clutch should last between 100,000 and 150,000 miles. Further the almost instant disintegration, indicates to him a defective clutch. Dealership called back and said they have never heard of any clutch problems on the new Wranglers at all. They went to their “District Chrysler Rep”. He denied coverage. They denied me his name and number and instead gave me the 800# for customer service. Any experience out there in how to best pursue this. Calling 800# now, will report back.

  31. Disintegrated Clutch 2007 JK Wrangler 45,000 miles – Just spent a lovely afternoon talking with customer service. Denied again, put on hold for 20 minutes (timed on cell phone) then disconnected. Called back, treated better, eventually transfered to a higher level customer service. Denied. Just received several photos of the clutch torn apart from the dealership. Shards inside the casing. The disk has a chunk torn out of it. Is there anyway to upload photos to share? And get further input or opinion?

  32. Disintegration of Clutch 2007 JK Wrangler 45,000 miles – Back and forth with dealer, 4 sets of photos from them. Pad is in chunks and shards completely stripped off. Pressure plate and disk intact. Is this normal and can it be expected every 45,000 miles?
    $1,050 to fix.

  33. oh man, i sure hope not and you have me worried. i had the tsb performed on my jk and now that my warranty is up, i’m having all kinds of issues with my clutch.

  34. My clutch finally went all the way out today. This is after 5 visits to the dealer because of the squealing. There diagnosis for it, dirt in the throw out bearing, “just spray water up there”. Same dealer that wouldn’t fix the broken track bar bracket on the rear axle. I’m looking to spend the weekend replacing this.

  35. I have a 2008 rubicon with the same or similar symptoms. I bought used with 5000 miles. jeep developed creaking/squealing/clicking noise when clutch out.. goes away with clutch in. Took to Jerry Ulm in tampa fl was told truck had dirt in bell housing causing noise could not be repaired under warranty. They replaced clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing for 900.00 out of my pocket. Noise came back within a week. Took to jeep/chrysler dealer in wesley chapel fl were I was told dirt had gotten inside bell housing(again!) and destroyed transmission shaft sleeve and the arm that pushes throwout bearing. They would not warranty because “I had MUDDED the Jeep” After explaining there were holes in bell housing that would allow dirt to enter and that I had only drove truck on dirt roads in Ocala Nat Forest(There is no mud!!) I was told I would have to pay again to repair((875.00). I considered this being called a liar and am very UNHAPPY!! I will certainly never buy a Chrysler product again!! On a side note is anyone interested in a slightly used 2008 Jeep Rubicon?? Tim R.

  36. I’m the guy above who had the clutch disintegrate at 45,000 miles in July 2008. Just tonight I left my Jeep in the parking lot of Krispy Kreme with what I believe Monday will be diagnosed as the same disintegrating clutch at now 69,000 miles. ie. 24,000 miles on this most recent clutch. Sooooo is it just my Jeeep Rubicon? Or are the others out there with the same short lived clutches?

  37. I had my 2007 JK rear main seal replaced, with the clutch kit,and throwout bearing at 36,000miles. the clutch was soaked with motor oil. the TSB for the rear main seal has been changed 3 times by jeep. 1 piece aluminem with 5 bolts, 3 piece aluminem with 5 pins, and last a 1 piece stamped steel held in place with 5 bolts. they would cover the rear main , but not the clutch. They wanted a $100.00 for a deductible for the rear main work, but would not cover the clutch. I had it at the trans shop all torn apart. It was $44.00 for the rear main and $30.00 for the labor on the rear main ,A LUK clutch kit from Auttozone,$300.00 for the labor on the clutch install, and $35.00 for the flywheel to be milled on both sides. The total labor hours to replace the clutch was 3 hours of wrenching. After I got a few thousand miles on the new clutch the throwout bearing started chattering ,but if I put just a little bit of pressure on the clutch peddle the noise goes away.

  38. Ok, I thought it was just my 2008 Wrangler, but now I’m sure Chrysler has issues with the clutches in the new Wranglers. My went out at 20K miles. Dealer wouldn’t cover it because it was a wear item. Now, I’ve had TWO More clutches installed, they covered these but still does not work. The clutch does not disengage when you press the pedal. Not all the time, usually when coasting or down shifting to a stop. They said the second clutch, first replacement, was burned out. It was installed two days earlier!! OMG! I love my jeep, but I may have to reconsider.

  39. I figure I’ll toss my story into this thread.. I drive a 2008 JK 4 door Sahara with 60k kms (was supposed to go in for the 60k service next week). This past weekend while exiting the highway, gearing down from 4th to 3rd in a yeild.. I heard a very loud snaping sound, followed by complete clutch failure. With luck I managed to pop it into neutral and coast into a parking lot. 4.5 hours of waiting for a in city tow later, the dealer is saying that it is extended driver error that caused the failure. I’ve been driving a manual since 1996, driven rally also and never had any clutch problems! Unlike most other posters, I had no squeaking sounds, no odd symptoms, nothing to tell me that I should check it/have it checked. I have never wheeled this jeep, I have access to beater trucks for that sort of fun stuff. I’ll keep you guys posted on what they come up with today. There is no way that a clutch should blow out like that at 60k kms!! That’s only 37k miles! with no warning signs

  40. Well, add another to this list. We had our Jeep in for service 4 – 5 times in the first six months due to a faulty anti-rollover sensor that was malfunctioning until they finally disconnected it. We asked about the squeaky transmission but were told that was ‘normal’.

The throw out bearings went out – now they’re telling us we’re out of pocket for the repairs.

  41. My 08 JK X is on its 3rd clutch, and based on the way it limped home this morning ill probably be installing 4th shortly. Same issues as all of you, no warning. Complete disitnigration. And no assistance from the service department. Though I did after hours of fighting on thephone have them agree to pay for the 2nd replacement clutch… only to have the distract service manager decline the warranty through all departments he oversees. *insert choice word* chrysler
