NUMBER: 21-002-07 REV. B
GROUP: Transmission
DATE: July 17, 2007

SUBJECT:
Flash: Torque Converter Shudder / Shift Quality Improvements / DTC P0732

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software and replacing the torque converter as required.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle operator may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

1. Transmission Shudder - 42RLE All, 41TE CS/JS, 62TE CS/JS
a. This condition can only occur after the vehicle has been driven and the torque convertor is past the break in period. Torque Converter break in can be confirmed with the StarSCAN®.
b. If experienced, the shudder may occur when the transmission temperature is between 38° C and 54° C (100° F and 130° F) during steady state driving with the torque convertor in partial lock (EMCC) operation. The shudder feels like the vehicle
is being driven over rumble strips.
2. Torque Converter Pull In Bump - 41TE JS, 62TE CS/JS
a. This condition can occur due to abrupt torque converter clutch engagement during EMCC initialization.
3. DTC P0732 - Gear Ratio Error in 2nd Gear - 62TE CS
a. The MIL may or may not be lit (2 trip fault).
b. Limp In will occur when this fault is set.
c. This is an intermittent condition and cannot be duplicated. If the fault can be duplicated, other conditions exist and further investigation will be required.
4. Shift Quality Improvements - 62TE CS
a. Rapid Decel Coastdown Stumble.
b. Low Speed 3-2 Kickdown Harshness.
c. 4-5 and/or 5-6 upshift flare bump.

THANKS FOR THE TSB. I KNEW SOMETHING WASNT RIGHT, IT OCCURS WHEN I’M GOING ABOUT 40 MPH AND THE RPMS ARE ABOUT 1400. IT FEELS EXACTLY LIKE STATED LIKE I’M DRIVING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS. TAKEN HER IN MONDAY.

Does anyone know if the torque converter has to be replaced? Or can they just run the flash? My understanding is that the torque converters are all on back order.

I believe the update states that the torque converter will need to be replaced.

Funny thing. Just bought an 03 Liberty and had this problem. However after changing the torque converter , and a complete overhaul on the tranny, the problem with shifting patterns remained. Today, got the call that they are replacing the whole transmission. I have only had the truck a month and it has been in for this problem, going on the third week. I have only driven the truck for 9 days. At least I am getting a new transmission.

How do you find out the date of manufacture and the “sales codes”? Would like to know if my 07 Rubicon is affected. I don’t know the transmission type either. Any help?

  9. Tony April 9th, 2007 8:41 am

Had this TSB fix done last week. Completely resolved the issue and mad a noticeable difference in the way the Jeep’s transmission shifts.

  10. Rick April 24th, 2007 6:44 pm

I took my 07 Rubicon into the dealer with a shudder occurring going from 1rst to 2nd. I have the 42RLE trani with a build date of jan 07. Also a leak from my freedom top. They called back saying they could not find a leak and after driving 100 feet in their lot decided they could not find a shudder and there was nothing to fix. This is the first and last time I ever go to Jeep Carlsbad, CA. Those guys are a joke. They said wait till I have 5k on it and bring it back. I may bring it back every 100 miles if it keeps doing this. Suggestions?

  11. Tony April 25th, 2007 12:50 pm

    Rick,

The shudder that I had is when Jeep is going about 40mph and most of the time in the last gear (overdrive). As mentioned, this TSB reolved the issue. Have not heard of the problem you mention between 1st and second. I would recommend making an appointment and taking the service manager/tech for a ride so that you can point out the problem. With regards to them not finding your leak, did they confirm they followed the instructions in the TSB that exists for the Freedom top water leaks? I belive it mentions that have to run water over it for 5 minutes or so.

    **** SHUTTERING ****

Yes, my Jeep Liberty 2007 has had this problem with TWO torque converters replaced (see DTC P0732)–still needing a third torque converter or new transmission. Problems started at 700 miles on the odometer–filed under the Florida Lemon Law and the arbitration panel found for the owner. This problem seems to thread not only Jeep Liberty but other Chrysler products with the same transmission. Any shuddering take it in to the dealer and make them fix it–they are aware of the problem even if they play dumb saying “this the first one like this that we have had in the shop”!

No excuse for an American made car and I’m disappointed in the way Chrysler handled this–they now own a 2007 Jeep liberty that has “lemon” attached to the title–good luck to all!

  15. Anne September 19th, 2007 11:14 pm

On my previous post for the 2007 Jeep Liberty–please note that should be “shuddering” or “shudder” and not shutter–my former English teacher would be appalled!

Dealership denies this TSB applies to my Wrangler built 2/07. Anyone else experiencing a shudder on a cold shift between 1st and 2nd gear? The local dealer stated this is normal (torque converter reduction) they called it to improve fuel economy.

  17. Don December 21st, 2007 7:34 pm

My 07 JK is doing exactly what Eric describes…..a shudder on a cold shift between 1st and 2nd. It’s a little unnerving, but I haven’t taken it in or anything.

  18. spozzie January 14th, 2008 1:58 pm

Took mine in on Thursday and the dealership have ordered parts and I return the jeep 01/22 to have it completed will advise of the outcome.

  19. Kyle January 17th, 2008 4:57 pm

I think that I have this problem, but it’s a 08 built sometime in the month of October it should not have this problem. I was just wondering if any other people with 08s are having this problem.

  20. Jeff McGee January 19th, 2008 5:56 pm

My 07 wrangler is doing the shuddering with a cold shift from 1st to 2nd gear. It also grinds a bit going into second when the jeep is cold. Clutch is pushed to the floor. Any help on this? I took it to the dealer and they said they couldnt make it grind….What should I do? Grind and shuddering related? 11k miles

Got my 2007 back from the dealership after the TSB was performed and it is noticable just how bad the situation was (decel stumbledown poor shift quality and lack of pick up). The dealership took 2 days to complete (TSB states 5-8 hrs) but it does appear to have improved shift quality and performance considerably.

  22. Clint January 29th, 2008 6:52 pm

I have a 2008 JK 4dr Sahara and believe this is happening. I first noticed it after I went off roading for the first time and thought it might be some dried mud throwing off balance in the wheels, but after a good cleaning, I am still experiencing it.

I feel the shutter sometimes while driving at different speeds, AND most noticably sitting at red lights as the whole thing (especially steering wheel and dash) will start to shutter, last 30 seconds or so, and go away.

I’ll be taking it in soon and tell them it wasn’t limited to 2007 models.

Has anyone else experienced this on a 2008?
