TSB – No Engine Crank Or No Engine Start Due To Electronic Lockup Of The WCM / SKREEM

NUMBER: 08-007-08 REV. A
GROUP: Electrical
DATE: July 04, 2008

SUBJECT:
No Engine Crank Or No Engine Start Due To Electronic Lockup Of The WCM / SKREEM

MODEL:
2007 – 2008 (JK) Wrangler
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or before May 05, 2008 (MDH 0505XX).

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves the replacement of the Wireless Control Module (WCM), and if equipped, the replacement of the Electric teering Column Lock (ELV). The WCM is also referred to as the Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer will experience a no engine crank AND a no engine start condition. Also, the remote keyless entry (RKE) system will not operate. This condition may be due to an electrostatic discharge (ESD) from the ignition key into the Wireless Control Module (WCM), causing the WCM to electronically lockup. This condition may occur more frequently in dry and/or cold weather conditions where a sufficient electrostatic charge is more easily produced. This condition is corrected by the replacement of the WCM.

  1. I had this issue with my 2007 JK. I went to start it after work one day and nothing happend when I turned the key. It was like the battery was dead but then when I opened the door the alarm started going off..? I had it towed away and the dealership replaced it under warranty and it’s been working fine since.

  2. I have the same problem. At times I turn the key and it only clicks. I’m glad i’ve come to this web page. I’ve taken my jeep to have it checked but since they can’t recreate the problem nothing is done.

  3. this happened on my 2010 jeep wrangler sahara went out to the parking lot after work only to find this occurring after attempting to jump the battery i said something else is wrong -for sure the dealer said the WIRELESS module went bad – was not recognizing the key

  4. Just had this happen last night on my 2008 Unlimited, built in January of 08.
Came out of the store, and with the lights off, and no key in the ignition, I got the chime that usually tells you you left the lights on, or the key in the ignition. I went to crank it, and while all the lights came on, it wouldn’t crank. Also, the rd LED in the upper-right corner was continuously lit. Also noticed the clock on the radio was blank.
I tried removing the IOD fuse, but that didn’t work. Disconnecting the negative battery cable did work, and when reconnected, the horn chirped, which is also the security system saying it has been tripped.
Got in, and it started up. Fortunately, it hasn’t done it again, but I fear it will, after leaving me stranded last night in sub-freezing weather.
Took it to the dealer today, and they’re backed-up, so we’ll see tomorrow.

  5. This happened on my 2008 JK unlimited for the first time mid december 2010. In a walmart parking lot with a million people looking at me lik eim trying to steal the jeep. the alarm kept going off over and over. finially DISCONTECTED THE POSITIVE TERMINAL, LET SIT FOR ABOUT 20 MIN AND RECONNECTED, HORN CHIRPED AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE, started up no problems after that, and hasnt done it since. It was freezing cold and snowy. Good luck! hope it dosnt happen to you.

  6. I am experencing same problem got down below zero lastnight.I talked with dealer in louisville he thought this was the problem since under warranty called tow.It acts like the nuetral safety switch is not working on clutch. 09 JK Rubi

  7. Same clicking issue….dealer reconfig the TIPM with new Chrysler update, started at dealership, but next time, the same issue.

  8. So this has happened to my 2010 Jeep wrangler 4 door. It is still under warranty. Had to have it towed to the dealership to have it replaced. Is there any indicator on the dashboard that provides information that the SKREEM is not functioning?

  9. I just learned from a repair shop, doing service under an extended warranty agreement, the wireless control module described requires replacing to prevent the occasional, no start- syndrome as described above. Was this not a ‘recall’? If so, should I take this to a Jeep dealer?

  10. I have had intermittant starting problems for a couple of years with my 08 jk. I recently replaced the ignition switch and solved the worst of it. Then I realized the no crank problem when I would get off work was due to leaving the doors unlocked and when trying to start nothing would happen. I finally figured out I had to lock and then unlock with the key fob before it would crank over. Then I checked to see if I could duplicate the condition and I can at any time. I have had no problem starting since.

  11. Have the same problem had starter replaced and this didn’t happen for about four months and today every time I go to start it lol.

I’m sure this is going to be a pain in the butt to get fixed.

Wish all this crap can be deactivated so the Jeep just starts on its own every time!

  12. Had this happen a number of times a couple years ago. Took it in to two different dealers but they couldn’t find the problem. They even replaced the starter under warranty. I have found that when this happens (now very rare) all I have to do is step on the brake and wiggle the shift lever (mine is auto)and it will start right up.

  13. 2010 wrangler been sitting in the carport for 4 days.decided not to start day before christmas. So far tried lots of things , but no change.Turn the key , dash lights up . battery is brand new and checked.Traced power up to the ignition switch , but turning the key does nothing. Can start it on a roll start, but tired of looking for hills to park on .
Trying to buy a new ignition switch ,, not easy in Aus .Will update as I go .

  14. This happens to me a lot for some reason. I’ve read that you can take a 10 gauge black ground wire and hook it up from the negative terminal on the battery to a bolt on the alternator. I usually just put it in Neutral and it starts right up.

  15. This has been happening to me for a few months now, I am aware of the service bulletin about the fix but wondering how much this will cost me? I am well out of warranty!

  16. Same with me. 08 Wrangler automatic soft-top. I have hand crank windows nothing power in jeep. Sometimes it wont start the red dash lite comes on. Tried changing the IOD fuse. Thought it was the starter replaced that, and same thing over and over turn the key and nothing.

  17. I have an 07 soft top. No power door locks or windows. Some times it won’t start and sometimes while driving or stopped the eng dies and all the lights on the dSh go haywire while the headlights, horn, wipers & washers turn on too. I’ve had the battery replaced and the dealership “flashed” the computer. That fixed it for about three years. Now I have the same problem. I’m gonna replace the battery and have them “flash” it again with updated codes. Ahhhh, the joys of jeep ownership!

  18. Is this an easy plug and play part where I can just go to auto store and order one and replace? Or am I s.o.l. and gotta get burned at dealer?

  19. I have 2010 Wrangler Sport, with Standard Trans, and no power doors or windows. It’s been happening to me for a year now and it comes and goes, mostly comes. I’ve done the ground wire from the battery to the alternator as well as disconnecting the the battery for and hour and a half as suggested on other sites. Still the problem exists. As long as I can still get it started I’m not bringing it to dealer until they have a definite fix for the problem. As of now, Jeep doesn’t seem to have a clue.

  20. my 2008 unlimited rubicon would not reset or unstick with the suggestions of removing fuse, battery cable, etc. I removed the column shroud and tapped the hell out of the wcm, fired right up. Seems like my relay was quite stuck. Just FYI, hope it helps. Thanks for all the info.

  21. My 2008 unlimited sahara begins to have this disease 2 months ago. Cold start on a rainy day : Battery light on and no start. One solution I found is to turn the key on/off 3 to 5 times… until the —— of the DTC error code is displayed. Then I turn off the key, remove it, put it back , turn and the car starts !
Hope this will help some of us to save some towing fees.
    Fab

  22. My 2013 Sahara, turn key to start, nothing happened, dash and overhead lights were fine. I did not noticed any codes. Got out locked with remote then started with remote. While it was running got in and put key in ignition and was able to back out drive way. Turn engine off, waited then turned key and started engine, no issue.

  23. This just happened to me a couple days ago, jeep (2008 2 door hardtop Rubicon) won’t start, the anti theft light lit up along with the battery light, and several other lights going haywire. I knew it was my battery or alternator because I just replaced it a week or two prior (both). I had a feeling it had to do with the computer. So i restarted my computer (disconnecting the battery for 8 hours (if the battery is drained for some reason, i don’t know why, I would charge it with a battery charger)) then put the battery back in and the jeep would start, but if you turn it off it will stay off and you’d have to restart the computer again. Im hoping its the WED and its just as simple as that. I’ll be back here when they get back to me (the dealer)
