Instructions

Here’s a pic of all the things you will get with your new Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer.
1. Insert the CD ROM that you will get with your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer into your computer and install the Tuner Software that comes on it. Then, use the USB cable that comes with the kit to connect your Max Energy Power Programmer to your computer, run the Tuner Software and carefully follow the step by step instructions it gives you. During this process, the Tuner Software will go online and will look for any firmware updates that the Max Energy Power Programmer will need to install.
2. Insure that the tires on your Jeep JK Wrangler are properly inflated. Then, using a tape measure, determine the actual height of your tire by measuring from the ground up to the edge of your tire’s shoulder as shown in this pic.
3. Climb inside your Jeep JK Wrangler, make sure your parking brake is set and that no electronic devices are plugged into your cigarette lighter or electrical outlet. Then, insert your key into the ignition and turn it to the RUN position but DO NOT start the engine itself.
  4. Connect the programming cable to your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer and to your Jeep JK Wrangler’s OBDII diagnostics port which is located under the driver side dash as shown in this pic. NOTE:
During the ENTIRE programming process, it is very important that you DO NOT remove or disturb the programming cable. The only time you should remove the cable from your Jeep JK Wrangler’s OBDII diagnostic port is when the Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer informs you that the installation has been completed.
It is also very important that you DO NOT leave your Jeep JK Wrangler during the programming process.
5. Once everything has been plugged in, the Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will display specific instructions for you to follow on its screen and you can make the appropriate selections needed by using the UP/DOWN and YES/NO buttons on the side of it.
  6. Your new Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will check to see if your Jeep JK Wrangler has any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) stored inside the computer and if it does, you will be given the choice to view them or clear them. If trouble codes are found, I would highly recommend that you view them and write down whatever code(s) show up so that you can check to see what they were for and address them accordingly. If not, continue to step #8.
7. After writing down all the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) your Jeep JK Wrangler had stored in its computer, you will need to clear them before you can proceed with the programming of your engine’s computer.
8. Your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will now communicate with your Jeep JK Wrangler and then it will ask you to select what grade of fuel you intend to use in your Jeep.
9. Your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will now ask for you to select the cooling fan temperature setting you would like to use. If you are still running a stock thermostat, simply select ‘STOCK’. If you are using a thermostat with a different temperature, select it now.
10. Your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer should now be asking you if your tire size has been changed. If so, you will need to enter it in now. Please note that the Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will only allow you to enter in a measurement that is accurate to a 1/4″.
11. Your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer should now be asking you if your axle gear ratio has been changed.
If you have upgraded your gears to 4.88’s or 5.13’s like I have, use the ARROW buttons on the Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer to locate the gear ratio you are currently running on your Jeep JK Wrangler.

12. Your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will now ask you to verify and confirm all the selections you have made.
13. If everything looks correct, accept the changes and your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will begin to read, copy and then write all the files onto your Jeep JK Wrangler’s computer. Just so you know, this may take about 20-30 minutes to complete.
14. After verifying all the information, your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer will ask you to turn your Jeep JK Wrangler’s key to the ‘OFF’ position and then after a few moments, back to the ‘RUN’ position.
15. Again, after a few moments, your Hypertech Max Energy Power Programmer should indicate that your Jeep JK Wrangler has been successfully programmed.

That’s it, you’re done. Your Jeep JK Wrangler should now be tuned for optimal performance and your speedometer/odometer should now be calibrated to match the tire size and gear ratio you are currently running. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  1. Thanks for the write-up. The programmer is now much less mysterious to me. I have seen mention that the Max Energy Power Programmer is able to adjust shift positions. Have you seen or used any such provision?

  2. Good write-up. Especially picture of how to measure tire height. However, for the JK, the only options that can be changed are tire height, gearing, thermostat temp and some limited performance programming (stock – returns to stock, regular – performance program using regular fuel, premium – performance program using premium fuel). There is no provision for the other options you listed: Adjust Engine RPM Rev Limiter, Adjust Top Speed Limiter to Match, Speed Rated Tires

  3. I have a stock Rubicon with 4.10 gears and stock 255 75 17 BFG MT tires (32.1 inches tall).

    If I go to 285 70 17 BFG KM2’s (32.7 inches tall) will I need to re-calibrate the speedometer? ????????????

    Thanks!

  4. jim, i have a 6-speed but i can tell you that once your speedo/odometer have been recalibrated, your shift points will change back to where they need to be.

ross, you are correct. i had just copied what was advertised on hypertech’s website and have since corrected what i had posted.

paul, yes – if you install 285’s, you will need to recalibrate your speedo/odometer and this will help you do just that.

  5. So if you are still driving a stock Rubicon with the stock gearing and the stock tires, this things is useless, right?!?!

  6. Does this programmer have the ability to program the speedo for tires over 32″ in the Wrangler X’s (2007 models specifically)?

  7. I have an 2007 Sahara with Dunlop 35’s on it (measured 33.75″ on 9 inch wide rims) with the stock 3.21 gears, and the onboard computer was reading about 16 miles to the gallon average. I have installed an AEM intake, Banks exhaust and after programing the computer using this Hypertech programmer, the spedometer is now right on now(according to my GPS), and my fuel economy has got back into the 19-22 miles a gallon range. As programmed for regular fuel.

I had to download the new update for my Jeep. The first time I plugged it in, It said there was an error, and to call Hypertech. So I used the included software and downloaded an update from the internet, and plugged it back in. Worked Like a champ that time. I could have avoided the problem if I would have just updated it first thing.

It worked fine on my 2007 Sahara, so it should work fine on the ’07 X. It justed asked me what size my tires measured to, so I assume it just takes the info it gets from your onboard computer and adjusts from there.

  8. i am thinkn of gettn me a programmer and curious on the tire sizing….i’m running 315X75X16(35X12.50X16) and the measurements of my tire is 34.6″… is this measurement what i would put in the programmer? curious…….

  9. @Shawn Your tire isn’t really 34.6″. Unless your Jeep is made out of cotton candy or you’re running crazy high PSI, your tire’s going to flatten out on the bottom (hey look, traction!). Either measure from the ground to the shoulder like the write up suggests, or use the chalk method described in the Hypertech manual.

The manual also states to pull the fuses for the remote start and sat radio? Ugh, going to call Hypertech and see if that’s *really* necessary.

  10. this programmer sounds good,BUT doesn’t void all warrentys to the transmission, engine, ect…. giving your jeep a better chance of have mechanical problems?

  11. In regards to pulling fuses on the Sat radio and remote start, that’s only while the programmer is doing it’s work. Since those likely draw power even while the ignition is off, that’s a precaution to keep things from interfering with the process. The manual clearly states to reinstall those affected parts/fuses once you are done with the process.

  12. I have a 2009 jeep JK and the jeep struggles going up highway inclines in overdrive. Does the Hypertech Max programmer help with the sluggish overdrive and is it worth the difference?

  13. Got this for my 2007 Rubicon 2 door. Getting almost one mpg more in town and noticeable acceleration improvement. I accelerate plenty in town and am getting 16mpg. All stock wheels, etc. I do have the performance mopar muffler though.

  14. I have this programmer and did notice some improvement in torque and horsepower. I did improve the gas milage as well. My question is, will this hurt the engine over time? I do have a 07 with a Air Raid intake w/ spacer, Garnelli spark plug wires, and flowmaster dual exhaust. The rest is stock. What can I do to improve it even more

  15. Can changing the cooling fan temp to 185 affect engine performance or is it bad for my engine if I am still running stock?

  16. I just upgraded my tires on my 2009 X from 255/75 17 to 295/70 17. Will I have to recallibrate my vehicle due to the larger tires? Also, would I have to do any further adjustments to my vehicle to accomidate the larger tires?

  17. I have jk 2009 model 3.8l vin number is but i have done modification with cop4x4 they installed 6.1l with 545rfe transmmission now when i done re-flash the pcm car doesn’t start & back fire i think that which cop4x4 they done the calibration i need to do it again so how i can do that

  18. i have a 2007 jk lifted, got it re aligned, 32″ tires on it for now, used the max energy module, it works great. i had the ABS, BAS, and traction control lights come on (randomly) wasnt off roading, ran the diag and 8 codes came up. i wrote them down and cleared them but the lights came back on…. is there a site i can goto to find out what the codes are?
    Thanks!

  19. I ask you a question from Japan.
    I imported it from Germany

Can I use it with a 2.8 CRD?
Because I cannot run, it is awkward that ESP & ESC malfunctions very much.
It is 5.13:1 ratio 40inch tire.
Sorry for your inconvenience, but thanking you in advance.
