A full width front bumper on a Jeep JK Wrangler is something that Chrysler is required to provide in order to meet federal safety standards and, while I’m sure they do their job, they’re a complete nuisance out on the trail. They get in the way of rocks, they effectively reduce your approach angles, they make it difficult for you to disconnect your sway bar links and being that they’re just plastic, they start to look pretty bad after just a few minor hits on the trail. And, it’s for these reasons that chopping up the front bumper and making it into a stubby is one of the most popular, useful and effective modifications that you can make on your Jeep JK Wrangler. Of course, in addition to all the benefits you will get from this mod, the best part about doing this is that it can be done for next to nothing and this write-up will show you how.

After more than 6 years of pushing Moby, our big white 2007 Jeep JK Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited around with a wimpy 3.8L V6 motor, it was high time to SUPERSIZE things. In other words, it was time for a V8!! But, rather than install a HEMI, we decided to do an LS swap or specifically, a GM 6.2L L94 V8 attached to a 6L80 automatic transmission. All this would be going in at Off Road Evolution using a MoTech LS kit and, in this short time lapse video, you’ll get a taste of what’s involved in a project like this. A more complete video will be produced once everything is done.

Out on the east side of the Panamint Valley, there’s a trail that takes you up the Argus Range and ultimately to an old tungsten mine known as the Defense Mine. While the trail is for the most part short and easy, there are a few challenging sections along the way that can be a lot of fun if you choose to take them. The biggest obstacle on the trail is known as Waterfall Zero or Zero Fall and, as the name suggests, it’s essentially a big dry waterfall made of marble, polished smooth and shaped like a chute. If you’re not careful, it’s definitely one that can do some real damage. Just past it, there’s an optional route to the top known as the Cummings Cutoff and, if you choose to take it, you’ll find yourself on a nice length of trail strewn with loose chop and big rocks. In this short video, you’ll get to see highlights from a recent run we did up this trail with a total of 8 Jeep JK Wranglers, 6 of which were 4-door Unlimited models and 1 of which was a 2-door Sport. We hope you enjoy it.

A BIG THANKS goes out to Tony, Stephanie, Doug, Moochie, Adam, Don, Lori, Dave, Laura and Ray for joining us on this run and for helping to make this video possible.

I always love hearing about how well Chrysler and especially Jeep is doing and apparently, both the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Compass each recorded their best sales ever. The Jeep Wrangler specifically sold 16,272 units which is up 13% - this shatters the sales record it set back in June of 2012!! Of course, Chrysler Group LLC as a whole reported May 2013 U.S. sales increased by 11% Percent, the best May Sales in 6 years!! Anyway, just thought I would share - GO JEEP!!!

Compact and powerful, the ARB High Output On-Board Air Compressor is affordable and can be installed with ease under the hood. With this setup, you’ll have a reliable source of air with you at all times and without taking up any space inside your Jeep.To find out how easy it really is to install the ARB High Output On-Board Air Compressor on your Jeep JK Wrangler, simply follow the instructions below.

Memorial Day weekend has always marked the beginning of summer for us and once again, this year was celebrated with a camping trip up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. However, unlike the previous 3 years which were more of a winter finale than anything, the weather was absolutely perfect this time around and we spent our time relaxing, exploring, partying and enjoying the company of good friends. Click on the link below to see pics from our trip - I hope you enjoy.

On our way home from the 2013 Overland Expo, we decided to take a round about way back to California and do a little overlanding ourselves. Heading south to Gila Bend and then west on Interstate 8, our first detour along the way would be over to an area known as Oatman Flats. Here, we would spend some time exploring the remnants of the old Butterfield Stage Route, the old Fourr’s Cemetery, the grave site of the family that the flats got it’s name from as well as the massacre site that got them buried there. The following morning and final leg of the trip, we passed by the small town of Felicity (aka, the “center of the world”) and checked out the old plank road out in the Imperial Sand Dunes. Click on the link below to see a few pics from our trip, I hope you enjoy.

Before heading back to California from our fun at the 2013 Overland Expo, we decided to do one last run up the Smiley Rock Trail which is located up near the old mining town of Jerome and, good portions of it are a part of the historic, Great Western Trail. Being that we’ve never run this trail before, we talked to a few locals about it ahead of time and unfortunately, must have gotten the information wrong as we ended up running it backwards. Starting on the south end of the trail, we found ourselves crawling our way down Martin Canyon instead of up it. But, for fun, we turned around at the bottom and ran a good portion of it back up as well before cutting out early and heading back home. Click on the link below to see some pics from our trip.

Since I first heard about it a few years back, I have been wanting to attend the Overland Expo and see what it was all about. Certainly, as anyone who knows me knows, I love gadgets and innovative equipment that can help out on the trail and figured, if anyone would have it, they would. Well, I finally got a chance to make it out this year and, while I did have a great time making new friends and doing some wheeling out in the Sedona area, I must say that I was a bit disappointed in the show itself. While I did see some cool refrigerators, a powerful solar power blanket and a kitchen solutions or two, I can’t say that I saw a whole lot more than that or, at least in terms of what the average Joe could really use and or afford. All jokes aside, I didn’t even see too many, if any, companies soliciting stereotypical snorkels or roof racks or even recovery equipment. What I did see a lot of were crazy huge and expensive off-road motor homes, trailers and kitchen sets. Seriously, if I were new to all this and didn’t know anything about “overlanding”, I would have thought that the term was just another way of saying, “camping for rich people”. Not that there’s a problem with that and, not that I wasn’t impressed with what I saw but, that’s about all I got out of it. Having said all that, here are a few pics that I took while at the 2013 Overland Expo. I hope you enjoy.
